What is yoga?
Yoga was developed over 5,000 years ago. The true definition of yoga is union, or the combination of mind, body, and spirit. One aspect of yoga, Asana, has become the most popular in western culture. Asana is the physical practice of yoga. The practice of yoga involves a combination of postures with breath work to provide movement based on intention and grace.
What are the benefits of yoga?
There are countless benefits of yoga including;
stress reduction, increased strength and flexibility, and improvements in circulation. If yoga is done on a regular basis, two to three times a week, the practice can help reduce the symptoms of arthritis and other common disease. Also, yoga detoxifies the body and provides an increase in energy.
Do I have to be flexible to participate in yoga?
Absolutely not! Participants of yoga will naturally begin seeing increases in flexibility after just a few sessions. Signing up for a yoga class is an ideal way to increase flexibility.
Will yoga help me lose weight?
If used in combination with a balanced diet, yoga can assist with weight loss.
What are the different kinds of yoga?
We have developed each of our classes to be different from one another, so they appeal to all different types of people. Some of our classes are more intense than others. A few of our classes focus specifically on making strength gains, while some are geared more towards those looking to increase flexibility or de-stress. Check out the class descriptions to see which format fits your goals.
Why does The Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center charge for yoga?
Yoga is a practice that if done on a regular basis, participants will gain extreme benefits and see many improvements both mentally and physically. Each week participants will build on what was practiced the previous week. Yoga instructors go through intense training so they can provide people with a safe and effective class.
Is yoga only for women?
Yoga is becoming increasingly popular among men. Yoga not only provides an increase in flexibility but also helps create a sculpted physique. Yoga helps prevent injuries common in athletes, and is a great compliment to any workout routine.
What should I wear/bring to class?
Plan on wearing comfortable clothing. Yoga is typically done without shoes and socks. We have mats in our studio. If you have your own feel free to bring one.
