How to Recieve a Massage

We provide the following information with the wish that you receive the highest quality massage :

  • When you receive your first massage from a therapist, they will ask you questions about your reasons for getting a massage.  They’ll also ask about your current health, lifestyle, and stress level and if there is any area on which you’d like to focus.  Always give your therapist accurate information.
  • Do not eat a heavy meal or drink alcoholic beverages right before your massage is scheduled.  It’s best to allow at least 1½ hours after eating before receiving a massage.
  • As a client, your job is simply to relax as completely as possible.  If this is difficult, we recommend that you try to focus on your breathing, taking deep natural breaths.  Think about letting your body become very heavy and imagine sinking into the table.  Try to imagine the unwinding and release of areas of tension.
  • Turn off your cell phone while in the treatment room.
  • It is not necessary to talk during the session.  This can take away from the experience of relaxation.  It is important, however, that you do talk to your therapist whenever necessary to give feedback as to your comfort during the massage, or if you want to request that something be done differently.
  • During the massage, the therapist may move your arms, legs or head.  This is a normal technique in massage.  Try not to assist.  When you do, your muscles will tighten instead of relaxing.  Therapists use movement of an area in order to stretch the area or to have better access to muscles in the area.  It may help to imagine that you are a rag doll with loose limbs.  If something is uncomfortable for you, let the therapist know immediately.
  • Occasionally during a massage you may experience some release of emotions as you relax.  This is normal.  Your therapist will continue the massage or stop if you wish.
  • Close your eyes and bring your center of awareness out of your head and into your body and enjoy a sense of relief!
  • If you suffer from a condition that requires you to be under a physician’s care, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or a recent surgery, it may be necessary to consult with your physician before receiving massage.  The therapist will help you decide when massage is not indicated and may request a written release for massage therapy from your physician prior to administering massage.
  • Drink plenty of water after your massage.
